AIRSTREAM CARAVAN TOWING REQUIREMENTS IN THE UK

It has come to our attention that there is a consensus of opinion that trailers form America are illegal to use on UK roads, this is not true, however there are certain things that need to be done to make them UK and European compliant.

(1) Towing with a vehicle of a GVW of less then 3.5 tonnes (most 4 wheel drives)

(a) The trailer must be under 7ft 6.5 inches wide.
(b) The body length must be 7 metres or under excluding hitch and draw bar (i.e. a 26ft Overlander would be within the legal length as the body length is 6.9 metres and the hitch is 1 metre.
(c) The nose weight must not exceed 150kgs.
(d) Electric braking is not illegal - we have been sent from the Ministry of Transport and subsequently we have found a brake controller which can be fitted into the trailer which works on deceleration.
(e) We are now fitting UK axles and hitches to most of our trailers.

(2) Towing with a vehicle in excess of 3.5 tonnes

(a) The wider Airstreams can be towed by a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes so long as the Airstream weight does not exceed 3.5 tonnes so long as this is the case properly fitted electric brakes are legal.
(b) The width of trailer is also not a problem.
(c) We can fit UK axles and hitches to these trailers as well however most of the larger units are sold as static and we can arrange transport to your destination.
